Eric M. Irwin

Owner, Administrator

Eric's Bio

Eric owns Newport Mesa Animal Hospital with his wife Katie, and works as the Hospital Administrator. He has been working here since 2002, after basically growing up running around the hospital. After managing the clinic for 6 years, he purchased the hospital from his father, Dr. Tom. He enjoys working alongside his father (Dr. Tom), whom now strictly practices veterinary medicine anytime that he’s not out surfing! Eric previously worked as a firefighter in Central California but resigned after 6 years to focus on running the family business.

Outside work, Eric spends most of his time on the golf course, playing as a professional golfer on various pro golf tours. When he’s not on the links, he’s spending time with his family. Did we mention he is a die-hard Anaheim Ducks fan AND Green Bay Packers fan?

His pets include Penny (Chihuahua mix), Tobie (Tuxedo cat), Nancy (DLH cat), and Linda (French Bulldog).

Katie C. Irwin, RVT

Katie's Bio

Katie has been with the hospital since 2005. She began her work with us as an intern, and with Dr. Tom’s training, she worked her way up to the Head Technician Position. Katie is very passionate about her work at the hospital, where she loves and cares for each patient as if they were one of her own. When Katie is away from work, she enjoys spending her time with friends and family. Katie is married to Eric Irwin, Dr. Tom’s youngest son and new owner of NMAH!

Her pets include: Penny (Chihuahua Mix), Tobie (Black/White cat) and Grey (Grey/White cat)

Dr. Thomas M. Irwin (Dr. Tom)

Dr. Tom is one of the most relaxed, down-to-earth vets you will ever meet. With over thirty years of small-animal practice experience, you will be in great hands here at Newport Mesa Animal Hospital. Haven’t met Dr. Tom yet? He will be the one running around in shorts and sandals, practicing medicine between sets at his favorite surf breaks.

Dr. Tom attended undergraduate school at University of Hawaii, where he fell in love with surfing. He then continued his education at the University of California at Davis and received his BS in Biology and Animal Science in 1978. He then continued his education at the University of California at Davis, where he received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1983. A very “low key and down to earth” person – his practice philosophy is to provide progressive quality medicine in a relaxed, common sense, honest practice with the pets well being of primary importance.

His other passions include his family and recently welcomed new granddaughter Olive! Surfing, hockey and live music are also other passions of his. Pets include Bajo.

He enjoys spending 1 week per month in San Jose del Cabo surfing, relaxing, helping Dr. Ruben Pawling (local Veterinarian) and two local animal rescues in Los Cabos.

Dr. Jennifer A. Keating

Dr. Keating's Bio
Dr. Jennifer Keating began her veterinary career right here at Newport Mesa Animal Hospital in 2002. She worked under Dr. Tom for 10 years while continuing her education for acceptance into a veterinary school. She graduated from UCI with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, then continued on for a second Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Health at Cal Poly Pomona. During her initial employment with us, she obtained her RVTg (Registered Veterinary Technologist) license. In 2012 Dr. Keating was accepted to the University of Minnesota Veterinary School. She completed her final clinical rotation with Dr. Tom at Newport Mesa Animal Hospital in early 2016, and ultimately graduated and obtained her DVM license from the University of Minnesota in the Spring of 2016.

Following graduation, Dr. Jennifer Keating happily accepted a full-time job offer to return to Newport Mesa Animal Hospital to work right alongside her lifelong Veterinary teacher, Dr. Tom. She now is working as our 2nd full-time veterinarian, and we couldn’t be happier to have her back in the NMAH family!

Her pets include: Oliver (Bernese Mountain Dog)

Dr. Susan Steiner

Veterinarian

Dr. Steiner's Bio
Dr. Susan Steiner joined our team in January of 2018. She received her BASc in Veterinary Medicine from UC Davis in 1995, and her doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from UC Davis in 1999. With over 19 years of experience treating small companion animals in Orange County, Dr. Steiner is the perfect addition to our team. She has a special focus on internal medicine, ultrasonography, surgery and dentistry, as well as general patient care. With Dr. Steiner as one of our three full-time veterinarians, we will now have the ability to perform in-house ultrasounds!

Outside of work, Dr. Steiner is a very active individual who enjoys distance running, cycling, marathons, waterskiing, snow skiing, and hiking with her golden retriever, Henry, and bichon mix, Dylan.

Krizia Bolanos, RVT

Practice Manager, RVT
Kristina's Bio
Krizia starting working with us in May of 2012. She’s a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) who graduated from the Professional Veterinary Assistant school. You will find her working multiple positions in the hospital, from receptionist to technician and as well as administrative work as the Assistant Manager. She’s bilingual and can speak fluent Spanish. Outside work, Krizia enjoys playing soccer and traveling.

Her pets include: Brock (Boxer) and Puffy (Poodle Mix)

Kristina Fipps

Office Manager
Kristina's BIo
Kristina has extensive experience in the veterinary field. After starting with us in 2013, she has worked her way into the position of our Office Manager. On the weekends, you’ll find Kristina at the soccer fields cheering on her son and daughter.

Her pets include: Payton (Rhodesian Ridgeback Mix)

Angela has been with us for 4+ years, tending to your loving pets. You will find her up front ready to assist you with all your questions and pet needs. On her free time she enjoys shopping, dancing and spending time with her family.

Lily joined our team in May of 2018, bringing over six years of experience in the veterinary field. When not at NMAH, she enjoys spending time with her malti-poo Daisy, going on local hikes and visiting theme parks.

Tiffany Lewis

Tiffany joined our team in May of 2020. She has over 10 years of experience in the field and has a strong passion for animals. While he is not at the office she spends her time traveling, going to Disneyland, and spending time with her family. Her pets include Oscar (Shih Tzu), Simba (DSH), Tyler, (Persian), and Pumbaa (DSH).

Kailie joined our team in September of 2020 as a veterinary receptionist. She has previous experience in emergency veterinary medicine.

Jorge Fregozo

Veterinary Technician
Jorge's Bio
Jorge was hired alongside Patrick. He has quickly advanced through hard work and training, and now works as one of our Veterinary Technicians where he assists our doctors and provides loving care to our patients. Jorge is a natural in dealing with our patients. Outside work, you’ll find Jorge at the motocross track or on the soccer field.

His pets include: Storm (Boston Terrier Mix) and Bradley (Lab Mix)

Chelsea Santiago, RVT

Veterinary Technician
Chelsea's Bio
Chelsea joined the NMAH team in July 2018. She is an RVT, graduated from Stanbridge in 2016. She has been working in the veterinary industry for 5 years. During her time outside the hospital she enjoys hiking with her husband and 2 dogs.

Her pets include: Zeppelin (Golden Retriever Mix) & Sabbath (Lab Mix)

Daniel Flores

Daniel started at NMAH in October 2019 as a Technician. He has been working in the Veterinary field since 2017. He studied Veterinary medicine at PIMA Medical Institute in San Diego and is currently ready to go back and finish school. In his free time he enjoys taking road trips with his puppy & hanging out with friends.

His pets include: KC (malti-poo)

Katia is one of our newest Kennel Attendants. She comes with a couple of years of experience. Outside of work she loves spending time with her dogs, going to concerts and traveling the world in her spare time.

Mayra started at NMAH in Nov of 2018 as an intern, she loved it here so much, she applied and became a Vet Assistant in June 2019. She graduated from CSULB in 2018 with a degree in Biology. She is working toward her goal of becoming a Veternarian. In her free time she enjoy’s hiking and ready at home.

Berenice Diaz

Berenice started at NMAH in September 2019 as a Vet Assistant. She comes to NMAH with a lot of experience working in animal hospitals. She graduated from Chico State University in 2019 with a degree in Animal Science, working toward her goal of becoming a Veternarian. In her free time she enjoy’s going to the dog beach with her dogs.

Melissa Lin

Melissa's Bio
Melissa started at NMAH in November 2019. She is originally from North Carolina, where she graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in Psychology. She has been working in the veterinary field for two years. In her free time, she enjoys reading, painting, and exploring the good eats of Southern California.

Angela Jackson-Brunning

Angela has been with us since 2012, and has been working with animals for the last 18 years, with experience in all areas of the hospital from reception to technician to hospital administrator. She is also a volunteer puppy raiser for Canine Companions for Independence, raising and training future assistance dogs for the disabled. As if that doesn’t keep her busy enough, she regularly fosters abandoned kittens and sick or debilitated animals for a local animal shelter. In addition to volunteering, you’ll find Angela poolside cheering for her favorite water polo teams or recharging herself at the beach.

Her pets include: Lariat (lab/golden mix), Wahini (golden retriever), Spencer (DLH), Eva (DMH), Charlotte (DSH), and Milo (Siamese); multiple fish, and a leopard gecko named Geico.

Dr. Paul Cechner

Board Certified Surgeon – On Call
Dr. Cechner's Bio
Mobile surgery specialist Dr. Paul Cechner takes care of our hospital’s more complicated surgery cases, as he does for several hospitals in our community. He graduated from Veterinary School in 1973 from the University of Illinois and completed his surgical residency in 1976 at Purdue, where he stayed on as an Assistant Professor of Surgery through 1983.

We’re proud to serve Costa Mesa, CA and the surrounding communities since 1983.
